What do I need in order to use 8ta Data services?

A handset that is enabled for web browsing, a laptop with embedded 2G/3G or a compatible 2G/3G modem and a subscription to one of 8ta's once-off Data packages or bundles.

How much Data will I need per month?

Browsing the internet and sending and receiving emails without attachments consume very small amounts of Data. Data consumption for sending and receiving emails with attachments will depend on the size of the attachments. Multimedia content, such as pictures, music, videos and online gaming, consumes very large amounts of Data.

What radio technology does the 8ta 3G networks utilise?

W-CDMA (wideband code division multiplexed access) radio technology.

How are 8ta Data services billed?

When you use 8ta Data services we'll only charge you for the amount of Data used. You do not have to pay for the time you spend online, only for the information that you send or receive.

What is UMTS?

UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone System) is one of the third generation (3G) mobile systems being developed within the International Telecommunication Union's IMT-2000 framework. The coverage area of service provision is to be worldwide, in the form of FLMTS (Future Land Mobile Telecommunications Services and now called IMT2000).

What are 1G, 2G, 2.5G, 3G and LTE?

1G networks (NMT, C-Nets, AMPS, TACS) are considered to be the first analog cellular systems, started in the early 1980s.

2G networks (GSM, cdmaOne, DAMPS) are the first digital cellular systems, launched in the early 1990s.

2.5G networks (GPRS, cdma2000 1x) are the enhanced versions of 2G networks with data rates of up to +/- 144kbit/s.

3G networks (UMTS FDD and TDD, cdma2000 1x EVDO, cdma2000 3x, TD-SCDMA, Arib WCDMA, EDGE, IMT-2000 DECT) are the latest cellular networks that have data rates of 384kbit/s and more.

LTE (an initialism of Long Term Evolution), LTE, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. It is based on the GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA network technologies, increasing the capacity and speed using new modulation techniques..

What is GPRS?

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) allows you to communicate, transfer Data and surf the web from your cellphone. To use GPRS, you need to have a GPRS-capable handset.

How do I install my modem?

Insert the USB Modem into the USB port.

Install the "Mobile Partner" application - the device will automatically install the drivers. Follow the prompts.

You will see "Welcome to Mobile Partner setup wizard". Click "NEXT".
Read the license agreement. Click "AGREE".
Choose the installation location. Click "NEXT".
Choose the "START" menu folder and "INSTALL".

The installation process starts (please be patient as the installation process may take a while).
In "Mobile Partner", go to "TOOLS".
Select "OPTIONS".
Select "PROFILE MANAGEMENT".
Delete the current "Default Profile".

Select "NEW".
Enter "TELKOM" in the "Profile Name" field.
Select the "STATIC" tab, and type in "INTERNET" in the "APN" field.
"Save" the current settings and exit.

Your device is now set up and should have a data connection.
 

Installation instructions for Mac OSX Lion (10.7)

1) After installing Mac OSX Lion(10.7), please install the Java VM update for Lion to enable your 3G Data Card. This can be accomplished by manually connecting the 8ta dongle via the dial-up option under Network Preferences.


2) Under System Preferences, click on Network, select the Modem, then select the checkbox "Show modem status in menu bar". Close the Window and the click on the phone icon on the task bar. Select "Connect Huawei Modem" and then run the dashboard and install the recommended update.
