Nintendud: I have been with 1and1 for just over three years now. I began with their free package. So far, I have not had any problems with them.
Customer Service: I don't contact customer service often. When I do, I opt to email them. When I emailed them last, it was about resume not working on FTP transfers. I got a response back in about two days, which isn't fast, but I didn't mind. Turns out you need to upload a .ftpaccess file with a special line in it to get it to work. Why they didn't automatically enable resume I don't know. If I upload large files to them, it's not uncommon that they time out after about 80 megs, which is why I needed the resume.
Pricing: I love all the things they give me. Granted, I would like more than 10 FTP accounts with my $5 account, but I can live with the 500 gigs bandwidth and 50 gigs space. I feel like I got what I paid for-- and more.
Reliability: Occasionally, my site gets a little slow. It rarely happens. Also, in the beginning I remember a few DNS issues, but that was years ago and hasn't happened since. My website has never been down, and I get 100KB/s-600KB/s per connection from downloads, depending on the time I download. There's nothing I can complain about except those small slow moments.
Recommend to Others: Yes, I have been recommending 1and1 for awhile now. They are a great value. Although customer service is their weak spot, I have rarely ever had to contact them.
Final Notes: The control panel is set up awkwardly. Sometimes it is hard to find where an option is. However, everything is there, and I have gotten used to it. If you are looking for a budget host, or perhaps a place to store large files, I think 1and1 is a great host to use. However, since I don't operate websites that ever see more than 100 people on them at once, I cannot say whether or not it would work as well for a very popular website.
