Use 1&1 as a mail backup to my web site

I have recently decided to use them as a mail backup to my web site. I thought it would help marginally with reliability in case my machine dies or I need to take it down for repair. I have tried contacting them by email and phone and in both cases had no problems. I got right through on the phone and the email usually responded within 8 hours. Via email they pointed out a bonehead MX error I had made with my external DNS company (I am not using them for DNS as I do not know yet how trustable they are)--and after I corrected, mail was flowing correctly.

So far, I don't know if mail is arriving as quickly as it used to. It seems somewhat slower, perhaps introducing a few minutes delay. I am checking this via their web form login since I know I have introduced my own delay by way of the fetchmail app to pull the mail in from 1and1 to deliver locally. -- iplawyer
